Imaging focal liver lesions in children

چکیده

There is a wide differential diagnosis of focal liver lesions in children including inflammatory lesions, cystic lesions and benign and malignant neoplasms. Imaging confirms the presence of a focal liver lesion, assesses the extent of disease and characterises the lesion. Initial ultrasound findings will determine if other imaging modalities are required, which include nuclear medicine (NM), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Imaging may also guide biopsy and be used in therapeutic intervention. Clinical findings and laboratory tests are important considerations in evaluation. This article aims to provide a practical approach to the assessment of the focal liver lesion in a child and review in more detail pathologies unique to the paediatric age group.

Focal nodular hyperplasia and hepatic regenerating nodules in pediatric oncology patients: how much invasive approach is necessary?

INTRODUCTION Hepatic regenerating nodules (HRN) and focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) are benign regenerating lesions of the liver that rarely occur in children. An increased incidence of these lesions is reported in children treated for cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eight children who developed FNH and HRN after treatment for malignancies in the Oncology unit at the "Bambino Gesù" Pediatric Hos...

[Space occupying lesion in the liver].

Space occupying liver lesions usually present with abdominal pain or abnormal physical findings, such as a palpable abdominal mass or distention. Liver lesions identified in children include benign and malignant neoplasms, inflammatory masses, cysts and metastatic lesions. Two-thirds of liver lesions in children are malignant. Hepatoblastoma accounts for two-thirds of malignant liver tumors in ...

Comparison of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging and 5-Phase Computed Tomography in the Detection and Characterisation of Focal Liver Lesions

Objective: To compare superparamagnetic iron oxide-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging with 5-phase computed tomography in the detection and characterisation of focal liver lesions. Patients and Methods: We prospectively performed 5-phase computed tomography scans followed by magnetic resonance imaging of the liver with superparamagnetic iron oxide magnetic resonance contrast medium in patients...

بررسی نقش آسپیراسیون سوزنی باریک با کمک سونوگرافی در تشخیص توده های کبدی در هشتاد بیمار

Ultra sound due to its safety, low cost and ease of performance is the primary method of choice in liver imaging. In addition, at present time, real time sonography appears to be one of the most accurate guided technique for liver biopsy. This study was undertaken to evaluate the value of sonographically guided fine needle aspiration cytology ( FNAC) in diagnosis of foc...

Focal liver lesions evaluated by MR imaging.

Magnetic resonance signal intensity of focal liver lesions is the result of their histological and cytological features. Therefore, analysis of lesion signal intensity and enhancement patterns obtained with magnetic resonance imaging is essential for the differential diagnosis of focal liver lesions. In this article, we review the magnetic resonance imaging features of the most common focal liv...
